Long-haul flight hacks: Flight attendant’s number one tip for surviving plane travel

There are plenty of ‘hacks’ out there promising to be the answer to your long-haul flight woes, but one flight attendant says the trick to surviving the trip is actually very simple.

Bryony has been a flight attendant for 16 years and worked across economy, business and first-class cabins.

While she says her favourite part about her job is ”helping passengers” on their journey, she also loves offering tips.

And when it comes to surviving a long-haul flight, she tells 9Travel her number one tip is to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

“Keeping hydrated is the best way to minimise jetlag and helps to combat the dry environment of the aircraft cabin,” she shares.

“It can help bringing your own drink bottle onboard and having it refilled regularly – just ask your flight attendant.

“This, alongside keeping your skin hydrated, stretching regularly, and taking regular bathroom breaks, are all easy ways you can survive and thrive once you reach your destination.”

Bryony has travelled to over 25 countries as a result of her job, but there is one clear favourite.

“My favourite place I’ve travelled to is LA, they have great weather, quirky neighbourhoods, and it has a fantastic culinary scene,” she tells us.

“It’s a melting pot of options.”

For anyone else about to head overseas, the airline worker also has some advice around one of the biggest mistakes she sees travellers make.

Mistake to avoid when travelling

It all has to do with how you use your money overseas, and having safe places to stash your cash.

“When making purchases or withdrawals abroad, you may be asked to choose between your home currency or the local currency,” Bryony, who has also been working with Mastercard, says.

“It’s worth doing some research on the current exchange rates between the two currencies before your trip. This will help you decide which option works out better for you when prompted, allowing you to get the best rate possible.”

Bryony says flight attendants are generally happy to offer their travel tips and any advice during a flight if you find you’ve thought of questions.

“If you find yourself caught out and already on your way, feel free to ask your friendly flight attendants about what they do when they’re overseas,” she says.

“We’re always visiting new and exciting destinations and aren’t strangers when it comes to exchanging between different currencies. We’re always up for a chat, so don’t be afraid to start up a conversation.”
